You have two options for assistance:

I want to do my own taxes

File your federal and state tax returns free of charge using the United Way of Central Indiana’s My Free Taxes program. There is no income limit, and assistance is available if you have questions.

I want an IRS-certified VITA volunteer to prepare my taxes

If you made $66,000 or less last year, you may qualify. Free tax preparation service is not available if, last year, you owned or sold rental property; sold a business; had business losses or business use of home; or bought/sold stocks, bonds, or mutual funds.

How can I make an appointment?

Walk-ins are currently allowed for tax prep assistance. Please review the What to Bring Checklist below. Wait times may be excessive at present time.

Appointment scheduling is not available yet for this year.

What years can they help me with?

We will prepare taxes for the following tax years, subject to software availability: 2025, 2024, 2023, 2022, and 2021. You will need a separate tax packet for each year’s return you are requesting we prepare.

For 2022 and years prior to 2022 you will need a transcript from the IRS and State of Indiana so we can better serve you. To request a transcript, contact the IRS and the Indiana Department of Revenue to request an unredacted Wage and Income Transcript for each year needed.

Step 1: Visit the IRS online or call 800.908.9946.
Step 2: Make an appointment with the Indiana Department of Revenue. Call 317.232.2240 or visit 100 N. Senate Ave., IGCN Room N105, Indianapolis IN 46204. Please have your government-issued picture ID and Social Security card ready.
